A CASH boost of almost pounds 2m to help refurbish some of the nation's leading museums was announced yesterday by the Department of National Heritage.

The biggest grants, pounds 400,000 each, are going to the British Museum and the National Museum of Science and Industry; the National Museum of Scotland is to get pounds 350,000 towards a new gallery; and the Ulster Museum in Belfast is to get pounds 150,000. The awards, for 24 galleries, come from a joint government initiative with the Wolfson Foundation and Family Charitable Trust.
