Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, called for full gay marriage to be legalised yesterday, according to Peter Tatchell, the gay rights campaigner.
Civil partnerships between gay men and women have been legal since 2005, but gay marriage is still banned. Mr Tatchell said that the Conservative Mayor told him during yesterday's Gay Pride march in London that his party should back gay marriage.
A spokesman for the Greater London Authority said: "The Mayor's view is that if you can have a coalition between the Liberal Democrats and the Conservatives, anything is possible."
