Sir Tony Blair appeared before the Northern Ireland affairs select committee to discuss the effectiveness of the institutions of the Good Friday Agreement on Thursday, 16 March,

The ex-prime minister, who was elected after Labour won the 1997 general election, had a pivotal role in talks with nationalist and unionist parties from June that year alongside then-Irish prime minister (Taoiseach) Bertie Ahern was crucial to concluding the agreement in April 1998.

The agreement established a new government in Northern Ireland based on power-sharing between nationalist and unionist parties, and was key to bringing an end to the Troubles armed conflict that had been ongoing since the late 1960s.

Sir Tony appeared before the committee to reflect on the achievements the agreement represented at the time of signing and its continuing significance today, as well as how to address the current instability of Northern Ireland’s institutions.
