Neil Kinnock received the backing of his former adversary, Lord Jenkins of Hillhead, as a future EC Commissioner. 'I would be quite happy to see Neil Kinnock appointed to the European Commission by John Major,' the Liberal Democrat peers' leader told BBC Television. 'Mr Kinnock is not a great detailed administrator but Mr Kinnock has a lot of experience. The job of being European Commissioner is not purely that of being a detailed administrator.
'If Mr Kinnock is attracted by (the fact) that the Commission needs to have in it some people with a political feel, not purely a party political feel . . . I think Mr Kinnock would contribute a good deal to the Commission.'
