David Drummond, a book dealer and clown, paid pounds 161 at Sotheby's yesterday for this rare photograph of John Major's father, Tom. The picture, dating from 1916, shows Tom Major on stage in a production of 'After the Overture' with his first wife, Kitty. Tom Major, who was 63 when his son, John, was born to his second wife, Gwen, in 1943, died in 1960. Kitty died in 1928, a year after an on-stage accident.
