Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.David Cameron's links to the JCB millionaire and Tory donor Sir Anthony Bamford are facing fresh scrutiny after Labour demanded to know further details of his nomination for a peerage. The shadow Cabinet Office minister Michael Dugher has tabled parliamentary questions over the PM's decision to open a JCB plant in Brazil last month, and asking why Sir Anthony's nomination to the House of Lords was withdrawn.
Sir Anthony was in line for a peerage in May 2010 but withdrew at the last minute amid reports that the Lords vetting body were informed of concerns about his tax affairs.
Mr Dugher has asked Mr Cameron whether he had received a personal invitation from Sir Anthony to open the plant, despite a statement by No 10 last week that it had been arranged through the trade agency, UKTI.
Sir Anthony, JCB, and members of his family have donated a total of £4.96m to the Tories. It is thought he will receive a peerage in the next honours list.
