Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A list categorising some Labour MPs as hostile to their leader – purportedly drawn up by a senior aide to Jeremy Corbyn – has been leaked.

The Times newspaper says the document was drawn up by Mr Corbyn’s political secretary Katy Clark.

Among those considered “hostile” are Mayor of London candidate Sadiq Khan, former interim shadow chancellor Chris Leslie, John Woodcock, Ian Austin, Michael Dugher, Tristram Hunt and Yvette Cooper.

In total, 19 MPs are in the “core group” – those closest and most loyal to the leader, while 56 are in the “core plus” group – the leader’s outer circle.

A total of 72 MPs are labeled “neutral but not hostile”, 49 are in slightly hostile in “core group negative” while 36 are outwardly “hostile”, the most negative rating.

17 MPs are believed to be missing from the list.

A spokesperson for Mr Corbyn's office said they had no knowledge of the list.

“It doesn’t come from this office and we have no knowledge of it,” he said.

An anonymous Labour MP told The Times: “I think every single Labour MP will be surprised to find themselves profiled in this way.

“At a time when every focus should be on crafting a message to win support in the country so that we can displace an unpopular government with a wafer-thin majority, it is absolutely extraordinary to find that an ‘enemies’ list is being drawn up.

“The last politician to draw up a list of enemies was Richard Nixon; it didn’t end well for him or his party.”

Mr Corbyn’s difficulties finding allies in the Parliamentary Labour Party is in contract to his support amongst the membership.

He was elected by members, supporters, and affiliates in a first-round landslide in September – but recent polling by YouGov shows support for him has grown.
