Former Sinn Fein chief Gerry Adams has said those responsible for attacking his home with an explosive device on Friday should explain “what this is about”.

He demanded a “rationale” for the incident and for other activity which he said is “poisoning the atmosphere” in Northern Ireland.

There was a heavy police presence outside the homes of both Mr Adams and fellow Sinn Fein figure Bobby Storey after they were targeted, with significant damage caused to a vehicle.

At a press conference, Mr Adams said: “I’d like them or their representatives to come and meet me. I’d like them to sit down and explain to me what this is about.

“I’d like those who are involved in exploiting children in Derry to do the same thing, or those who are poisoning the atmosphere in east Belfast and causing havoc to do the same thing.”

He said he can be contacted through any Sinn Fein office, adding: “So that’s my direct appeal to them. Come and sit down and explain to me what this is about. Give us the rationale for this action.”

While no one was hurt, his party condemned the “reprehensible and cowardly” attacks in Belfast.

Prince Charles and Gerry Adams shake hands

Gerry Kelly, Sinn Fein’s policing and justice spokesman, said two devices were thrown, one of which caused damage to a car.

The police service of Northern Ireland said: “Detectives are investigating incidents at two houses in west Belfast, after reports were received of loud bangs at both locations at around 10.50pm on Friday 13 July.

“Officers attended and carried out searches, and have seized remnants of large industrial, firework-type devices, capable of causing serious damage or injury, at both locations.

“There were no reports of any injuries. However, a parked car was damaged at one of the houses.

“Detectives are investigating the incidents and would ask anyone with any information to contact them at Musgrave on 101 quoting reference number 1691 13/07/18.

“Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100 per cent anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
