A plan to build almost 50,000 new homes and create a new generation of "garden cities" will be announced by Nick Clegg today.

The Government will provide £225m to unlock schemes to build between 4,000 and 9,500 homes each, which have stalled through lack of private sector money.

Mr Clegg will say they could be surrounded by new areas of green belt.
