Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A girl of 17 left critically injured after a car carrying two other teenagers spun out of control has died in hospital, police said.

She was a passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa travelling from Sandy Balls holiday park on the B3078 towards Fordingbridge, Hampshire, when its 19-year-old driver lost control.

The car rolled, leaving the girl - who was a front seat passenger - with life threatening injuries following the crash just before 11.30pm on Thursday.

Last night the girl, who has not been named but was from Fordingbridge, died at Salisbury District Hospital, a Hampshire Police spokesman said.

The rear seat passenger, a 17-year-old unnamed boy, sustained serious spinal injuries and remains in Southampton General Hospital.

Police appealed for anyone with information to call Pc Simon Bradbury on 0845 045 45 45, quoting Operation Dunwich, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
