Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Theresa May is facing renewed pressure from Tory backbenchers to set out a roadmap for her departure as hopes of progress in the cross-party Brexit talks began to fade.

Negotiations with Labour are now in their sixth week but lengthy meetings have resulted in little progress, with Labour sources saying a customs compromise was "a million miles way" from their demands.

Tory backbenchers were due to meet to discuss overhauling party rules to oust Ms May as leader.

Sir Graham Brady, influential chairman of the 1922 committee of backbenchers, told the prime minister to set out a faster timetable for her departure during a private meeting on Tuesday.

Tory MP Richard Drax congratulates Penny Mordaunt for her appointment as defence secretary. He says it is a full time job to get to know the military.

Is that a sly dig at the fact she has retained her role as minister for equalities?

May is having none of that. She says Mordaunt is a former naval reservist and defence minister so she is in a good position. She also has plenty of work to do on equalities within the armed forces.

Scottish Tory Colin Clark says he enjoyed welcoming the PM to Scotland and claims it is time for Ruth Davidson to take over leadership.

He doesn't seem to acknowledge that Nicola Sturgeon is in charge because the SNP have more MSPs...

The first images of a planned £1.5bn Westminster decant have been revealed.

Parliament authorities plan to temporarily shift the House of Commons debating chamber and MPs' offices into existing buildings on the northern part of the estate.

This would allow the multibillion-pound renovation of the historic Palace of Westminster in the south, backed by new legislation being introduced on Wednesday.
