Nine people were being held at police stations in the North- east last night after an operation involving armed police and Scotland Yard's anti-terrorist squad. Six were believed to be detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.
The arrests follow a spate of bombings, including attacks on an oil terminal in North Shields and gas storage tanks in Gateshead.
