From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

POLICE have launched an investigation following the discovery of a body which may have lain undetected for up to three weeks in a camper van at a motorway service station, writes Graham Moorby.

The badly decomposed remains of a middle-aged man were found in a white Bedford van parked in a corner of the Gordano Services on the M5 near Bristol.

A passing woman motorist raised the alarm after she spotted the man's body inside the vehicle at about 8am on Saturday.

Avon and Somerset police are awaiting the results of a post- mortem examination but believe the man died of natural causes.

Employees at the service station - a popular break for holidaymakers heading for the West Country from London and the Midlands - said the van had arrived in the car park more than three weeks ago.

David McCann, operations manager, said police had yet to confirm how long the van had been in the car park. 'If it was there for several weeks then we will look into why it was not reported earlier.'
