From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A MAN was last night charged with killing a 31-year-old woman and her two-year-old son, police said.

Pauline Turner and her son James were found dead at their home in Ronkswood, Worcester, yesterday.

Both had been strangled and Mrs Turner had also been stabbed several times.

Police said a 24-year-old man from the Worcester area had been charged with both murders. It is expected that he will appear before magistrates today.

The woman's mother, Irene Warner, said: 'I am still in a state of shock. It is devastating.'

She said her daughter had been living in bed and breakfast accommodation for a year because the local council was unable to find her a home.

As a result her two older children David, aged seven, and Michael, six, had been looked after by foster parents.

Mrs Warner, 49, said: 'Pauline was over the moon when she was allocated the house in November and moved in at Christmas.'

She added: 'It meant they could live together again and she was looking forward to getting her boys back.'
