Lord Mackay of Clashfern, the Lord Chancellor, has been asked by the Commons Home Affairs Select Committee to justify legal aid cutbacks planned to come into effect in April and likely to affect 14 million people.

No Lord Chancellor is believed to have been asked to appear before a Commons committee before. Lord Mackay has been requested to give evidence at a hearing to be held the week after next.
