SWIMMERS enjoying the sunshine at Tooting Bec lido in south London yesterday where temperatures reached 23C (73F) - 10 degrees hotter than the seasonal average and the warmest since the beginning of September, writes David Connett.
The temperature recorded at the London Weather Centre meant the capital was warmer than places like Malta and Gibraltar, and prompted thousands of people into the traditional bank holiday exodus, clogging motorways throughout the country.
Weathermen said the weekend would be sunny with a risk of showers in some places, particularly on Monday.
