From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The world’s “tallest and longest tunnel slide” will open at London’s Olympic Park next year.

The ride will be built from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit tower and will be 178m in length and 76m wide.

It will have transparent sections so thrill-seekers will be able to see out during the £5 experience.

Speeds of 15mph will be reached during descent and the ride will last 40 seconds.

The tunnel is part of the Legacy Corporation’s commitment to developing the tower, which was designed for the London 2012 Olympics by artist Anish Kapoor and structural designer Cecil Balmond.

The Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park said: "We are delighted to announce that planning permission has been granted to build the world's tallest and longest tunnel slide from the top of the ArcelorMittal Orbit."

It said plans are now underway to install the ride which is due to completed by spring 2016.
