A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a baby was found dead inside a central London apartment block.

Police were called to a report that a mother had arrived at a hospital after giving birth at 2.06pm on Monday afternoon.

Detectives searching a flat in Taviton Street, Bloomsbury, found the body of the newborn baby.

A 26-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder, child neglect and concealment of a birth.

The baby’s mother remains in a stable condition.

Pictures from the scene appear to show a forensics tent outside a terraced home on the high-end central London street, near Camden, where homes can fetch £3 million.

One builder working next door said a bin they had been regularly using was sealed off by police.

He told The Independent: “There were so many police and ambulances. We saw a man being arrested on the steps they had him in cuffs. He seemed quite calm.

“There were four coppers on him others were bagging his stuff up.

“Next to the ambulance, they were holding up silver blankets all around to shield someone.”

DCI Sarb Kaur, leading the investigation, said: “This is a very complex and sensitive case.

“At this early stage, we continue to work alongside the NHS to ensure the mother of the baby receives the necessary care in hospital.

“My detectives from Central North Public Protection team are working on a range of enquiries and we await the results of forensic examination before we can establish the full facts of the investigation.”
