An immigrant on hunger strike escaped from a hospital where he was being guarded by two Group 4 security officers after being transferred from Campsfield House detention centre in Oxfordshire.

The man, who was not recaptured, fled Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital three weeks after six detainees escaped from Campsfield House. At least one of them is still free. A spokeswoman for the Home Office yesterday said the man had been taken to hospital after refusing food for some time.
