Detectives searching for a couple who vanished five weeks ago have found human remains in the ashes of a fire, police confirmed last night. Tests will now establish if the remains are those of Gary Pettitt, 25, and Jean Larkin, 24, from Liverpool.

It is feared they were killed in a drugs-related attack and their bodies burnt in a wood near Chorley, Lancashire. Jewellery belonging to the couple was also found.
