A woman caught on CCTV dumping a cat in a wheelie bin said yesterday that she was "profoundly sorry" for her "split second of misjudgment".

Footage of Mary Bale throwing tabby Lola into a bin prompted an online campaign, with some animal lovers calling for her execution on Facebook.

In a statement, Ms Bale, 45, said: "I cannot explain why I did this, it is completely out of character... It was a split second of misjudgment that has got completely out of control."
