Souped-up VW Golf smashes straight through house wall into living room, leaving father with serious leg injuries

A father suffered serious injuries when a sports car crashed into the living room in his family home and burst into flames.

The man was at home with his wife and their young child when a white Golf R – the fastest and most powerful version of the Volkswagen model – crashed into their living room in York in the early hours of Sunday.

Pictures show the vehicle wedged inside the building on Morehall Close after it punched a hole in one of the walls and caught fire.

A man in his twenties, believed to be the driver of the car, has been arrested in connection with the incident. He sustained minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital. The dad, who was in the living room at the time, was taken to hospital with serious lower limb injuries, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said.

His wife and young child escaped unharmed as flames burst from the mangled car, according to the fire service.

There were three people in the Golf, who were all taken to hospital with head injuries, the service said.

Three fire crews were sent to tackle the blaze which had spread to the house.

Police were called to the scene at around 1.25am and arrested a man in his twenties who is believed to be the driver, according to Minster FM.

He suffered minor injuries in the collision and was taken to hospital.

The car is being recovered from the house following a structural assessment of the building.

A crash investigator attended the scene to try to determine how the car left the road and crashed into the house.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101, select option 2 and ask for Traffic Sergeant Hamish Halloway if they have any information about the incident.

They have asked callers to quote incident number 12170157578 when sharing information.
