Police responded to reports that a man had collapsed with head injuries in Uppermill, which is near the town of Oldham, shortly after 11.30pm on Friday.
The victim, 34-year-old Daniel Hogan, was given first aid at the scene but died a short time later in hospital.
Detectives believe he had been involved in a physical altercation on the high street just before he collapsed.
Two 24-year-old men, who were arrested at the scene have been remanded in custody and will appear before magistrates on Monday.
Greater Manchester Police said the investigation is ongoing and they were particularly keen to speak again to a man who had already spoken with officers at the scene. Police believed he could hold vital information.
Detective Chief Inspector Liz Hopkinson said: “This is an incredibly sad incident which has resulted in the death of a man only a few days before Christmas.”
She said police were working to provide his family with support from specially trained officers.
“We currently have two men in custody, who will be questioned by detectives later today, however I would like to continue to appeal for anyone who may have information to please come forward,” she said.
“In particular, we would like to speak with a man that spoke with officers when they first arrived at the scene last night. This man is described as possibly being in his 40s and was wearing a pale blue short-sleeved polo style shirt and dark trousers, with short black hair.”
