Snow is probable on higher ground across Scotland and northern parts of Britain, but fears the UK will be mired in travel disruption – as it was at the beginning of March – were unfounded.
A yellow weather warning for snow has been issued, however, across eastern Scotland until Friday afternoon, with longer journey times expected on roads across higher routes.
“Sleet and snow are likely for parts of Scotland tonight,” the Met Office said. “Rain and hill snow will move into northern England, with further showery rain possible in the south later."
On Friday, Scotland and northern England will see rain and hill snow, but sunshine and showers are expected across much of the UK before heavy rain moves into southern England and Wales.
Saturday through to Monday will stay cold, with most people seeing rain and potentially snow. Overnight frosts are expected in most areas, the Met Office said.
“Into the Easter weekend, it remains pretty changeable,” said meteorologist Alex Deakin. “Another band of wet weather from the south, that could bring quite a soggy scene across southern England for much of Good Friday.
“There will be more showery rain over northern England, more sleet and snow showers over the hills of eastern Scotland.”
He added: “It’s not all doom and gloom, there will be some sunshine around. It looks like Easter Day might be bright and dry for many."
On Thursday, it was set to be a fine but cold start across much of Britain, with bands of showers moving in from the southwest.
Heavy bursts of rain and even thunder could strike across parts of England and Wales later.
