UK weather: Heavy rain and Boxing Day flood warnings to give way into mild weekend

Temperatures are expected to be warmer than average on Saturday and Sunday, with some areas even seeing pockets of sunlight break through, according to the Met Office.
A mild few days will come as a relief after rain was forecast to cover most of the UK on Boxing Day, with Scotland, Ireland and the southwest bracing for a particularly wet and windy Thursday and Friday.
Drizzles will persist in northern England on Friday while other areas remain grey and overcast, according to the Met Office forecast.
Saturday should see milder temperatures and dry weather for most the country, although clouds should remain.
As the rain starts to clear up, some areas – especially the Midlands and Wales – will start to see brightness on Saturday, according to a Met Office spokesperson.
A breezy Sunday will also see clouds start breaking up and allow winter sun to come through, although the southwest and London can still expect to be cloudy.
“There will be mild temperatures on Saturday, and Sunday temperatures will see some double digits,” a spokesperson told The Independent.
Areas in northern Scotland could reach 13C – temperatures around 7C are more usual in the last weekend of December.
Wales, usually hovering around 8C, could also see temperatures of around 14C, according to the Met Office.
Flood warnings – including a cluster along the southern coast – have been issued on Thursday as the southwest braces for heavy rainfall.
