Heavy showers threaten flooding in several parts of England on Tuesday while strong winds push in from the west, bringing gusts that are expected to top 40mph in coastal regions.
Flood warnings are in place in parts of the midlands, Somerset, Yorkshire and London though eastern areas of England and Scotland may avoid the rain, according to Met Office forecasters.
Dozens of amber alerts are also in place across much of England and Wales, as the unusually wet start to October continues.
The worst of Storm Alex has passed over the UK after the country saw a month’s worth of rain in just a few days but conditions have not settled quite yet and Britons should expect high winds throughout Tuesday.
The south coast of England will face high winds pushing up to 45mph while most other areas will see strong breezes throughout Tuesday.
A high of 16C is expected on the south coast while elsewhere temperatures look set to hover above 10C from the midlands right up to northern Scotland.
Conditions are expected to improve somewhat heading into Wednesday. While many areas will see some heavy showers, particularly in Scotland and northern England, rainfall is set to be lower across the board, the Met Office forecasts.
Sunny spells on Wednesday are however expected to give way to heavy rain on Thursday going into Friday as an area of low pressure moves in and more flood warnings are expected.
