From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Thursday is set to be brighter and drier than parts of the UK have seen of late, though forecasts show there will be some downpour and chill – mostly in the west.

Manchester, Birmingham and some parts of Wales will see rain this morning, though the Met Office projects this will dry out towards the afternoon. There will also be showers in the northeast of England, areas in and around Newcastle.

Wind will make it feel colder in these areas too, with breezes largely coming in from the west and travelling in an upwards direction towards the northwest and northeast of England. By 2pm, though, temperatures will rise – in Cardiff, there will be highs of 13C.

Elsewhere, in London and across the south there will be bright and dry spells for much of the day. Highs will not exceed 12C, 13C in some areas – a lack of wind and rain will make today feel generally warm.

Thursday night will be a largely dry evening with clear spells in the east though it will be dull and cloudy – with some outbreaks of rain – across parts of Northern Ireland and again, western Britain. Overnight rain will head eastwards, setting up the UK for Friday’s mixed bag forecast.

Early cloud and outbreaks of rain on Friday will largely clear eastwards in the morning, according to the PA news agency. It will then be a generally fine day as it will be mostly dry with lengthy sunny spells but there is a chance of showers across northern and western areas.
