An unsettled few days of sunshine and showers has been forecast, ahead of Britain’s sixth weekend under lockdown.

Although no more heavy rain is expected, there will continue to be patches of wet weather in between bursts of sunshine on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Oli Claydon from the Met Office said the UK could expect “typical spring weather” in the coming 72 hours.

“The general and easy way to look at it all is sunshine and showers. That’s the overarching summary for today and the weekend really – typical spring weather.”

On Friday all corners of Britain will experience outbreaks of rain, although the most persistent showers will be in south-east Scotland and north-east England.

Temperatures will be middling too, with the highest conditions forecast for the south-east of England at around 17 degrees. The further north you go, the lower the temperature will be, with cities such as Manchester and Newcastle only topping out at 12 degrees.

“As we go into the overnight period the showers will decrease and only linger in parts of eastern Scotland into tomorrow morning,” Mr Claydon said. “Tomorrow is another day of sunshine and showers, but probably drier than today.”

The temperatures will not be too different, and if anything slightly higher on Saturday, he added, with London possibly seeing the mercury hit 18 degrees and the Midlands around 15 degrees.

Overnight through to Sunday, the clouds will begin to clear meaning it could be “quite a chilly night” and even some patches of frost in places.

“As we go into Sunday probably another drier again day, sunshine and showers but less in the way of showers which are really confined to the east by this stage.”

However, just as the current band of rain moves on from the UK on Sunday evening the next squalls due to sweep in from the Atlantic are approaching.

Mr Claydon said by Tuesday morning there would again be heavy rain moving in from the south-west initially and then across the rest of Britain.

“It’s a similar pattern that we have seen of late, no signs of next week returning to settled sunny conditions we saw a week or so ago.”
