Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

British forces have handed over control of Camp Bastion to the Afghan army, signalling the end of UK involvement in the 13-year conflict.

Since joining the war in 2001 as part of the US response to the 9/11 attacks, 453 British servicemen and women have been killed in combat.

More than 2,000 US troops have died during the same period, and though the UN’s mission in Afghanistan only began systematically recording the figures in 2009, at least 20,000 civilians are believed to have been killed in the conflict.

Yesterday, British and American troops stood side by side as the Union flag and Stars and Stripes were lowered at Camp Bastion for the last time.

Writing on Twitter, David Cameron said: “We will always remember the courage of those who served in Afghanistan on our behalf and never forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice.”

Looking back on what Britain has achieved in Afghanistan in the past 13 years, the Defence Secretary Michael Fallon admitted that “mistakes” had been made.

“But don't let's ignore what has been achieved,” he said. “We now have some six million people in school in Afghanistan, three million of them girls.

“There is access in Helmand to healthcare and to education in that province that simply didn't exist 10 years ago.”

At the peak of the conflict, there were 10,000 British personnel deployed in Helmand. These are the portraits and names of the 453 who did not come back alive.
