Tunnock's staff take cake break

Supplies of Tunnock's teacakes, snowballs and caramel wafers could be disrupted as staff at the family-run bakery stage a two-day strike over pay.

About 500 workers at the factory in Uddingston, Lanarkshire, are due to walk out tomorrow and again next Tuesday after rejecting a 2 per cent wage rise. However, the strike coincides with Scotland's September public holiday on Friday and Monday, so production of more than a million teacakes could be lost.

Tony Devlin, of the Unite trade union, said: "We have continually said that if a sensible offer with no conditions is made, then we shall put that to members for them to decide. [They] are determined to get a fair and improved pay offer."

Tunnock's refused to comment on the dispute last night.
