Lifeguards ‘most likely saved his life’ after administering CPR

Police in Wales have appealed to the public not to jump off cliffs into the sea after a man was pulled unconscious from the water on Saturday.

The 23-year-old was not breathing when he was rescued but regained consciousness and was taken to hospital after receiving CPR.

Officers from Dyfed-Powys issued a fresh warning about the dangers of jumping into water from a height after the incident in Tenby, Pembrokeshire, on Saturday evening.

The emergency services were called to a beach opposite St Catherine's Island at around 6.15pm and the RNLI administered CPR to the man.

Inspector Gavin Howells said the RNLI “most likely saved this man's life”.

He said: “This incident highlights the serious danger posed by tombstoning or cliff jumping, and the potentially life-threatening consequences.

”We urge people not to take part in this sort of activity anywhere along our coastline, and not to put themselves or the emergency services at risk for a thrill.

“We would like to thank our colleagues at the RNLI for their swift response to this incident, and for their actions which most likely saved this man’s life.”

Police have warned for years about the dangers of tombstoning, including at Tenby, following a number of injuries and deaths from the activity across the UK.
