AN armed robber shot dead by police after he stole pounds 1,600 from a bank was a mercenary for the Muslims in Bosnia.

David Stone, 35, fired at officers as he fled from Barclays Bank in Highgate, north London, on Friday. He tried to escape in a dustcart but was forced to abandon it and ran into a yard where he was shot in the head. Sandra Harvey, his girlfriend's daughter, said yesterday he had been to Bosnia several times to fight.
