A teacher who was spotted in the street by one of his students while drunk dressed only in his boxer shorts and trainers has been struck off following a disciplinary hearing.

The man – known as Teacher Z to protect his anonymity – was caught on camera in the state of undress, in a video clip that was later shared to Facebook where it was seen by staff and students alike.

The education professional would later go on to be arrested for abusing a paramedic on the July morning of 2018 – a charge he failed to disclose to the secondary school where he worked.

He was later handed a conviction in court related to the incident, and ordered to pay a fine.

Finding to have been in breach of the teacher’s code of conduct in six separate ways, the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) ruled the mean was "currently unfit to teach" – settling on the opinion that there was a "high risk" of a similar incident happening again.

He will now be permanently struck off unless he can demonstrate having taken “sufficient steps in his recovery to be considered fit to teach" within the next year.

The panel said: “Having regard to the very serious nature of the conduct, the high risk of recurrence and the public interest considerations that the teacher falls significantly short of the standards expected.

"For these reasons, the panel concluded that the teacher is currently unfit to teach."
