Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Royal Mail has won back a contract to deliver statements to British Gas customers, which it lost to a rival in 2007.

The postal group said it was the biggest major business mail contract to return to the organisation since a new regulatory framework was brought in last year.

The contract, which it lost to TNT in 2007, involves the collection, sorting and delivery of statements on behalf of British Gas.

Royal Mail has also been awarded a contract to deliver smart meters to British Gas engineers, and an extension to a deal for the overnight delivery of parts to the same company.

Mike Newnham, Royal Mail's chief customer officer, said: "Royal Mail is delighted to have won a competitive tendering process to collect, sort and deliver British Gas's statement mail.

"In a competitive postal market, Royal Mail's reputation, competitiveness and strength of account management were instrumental in securing this contract win."

Rob Morton of British Gas said: "We've set Royal Mail challenging objectives to ensure our customers get the best service and value, and look forward to working with them in the coming years."
