Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. He is the size of a pony, eats two pounds of food a day and is looking for a new home – Jagger, a white Great Dane Cross, is up for adoption by the RSPCA.
Weighing nearly 80kg, Jagger is the largest dog to ever be taken in to the charity’s centre at Millbrook in Surrey.
The three-year-old-hound came to the centre as part of a cruelty case, after being tied to a lamp post and abandoned.
RSPCA traced the dog’s owners who admitted he had been kept outside because he was too big for them to cope with. When found, Jagger was covered in pressure sores from his life outside.
Staff at Millbrook Animal Centre in Chobham said: “He is probably the biggest dog we’ve ever had at Millbrook – so much so that he does not even fit into our usual kennel blocks.
“Jagger is lovely - docile and friendly, he is quite a gentle giant! [He] is extremely strong to walk on the lead - it takes two members of staff to do this!”
To put Jagger’s size into perspective, staff placed the Great Dane, who is still slightly underweight at 78kg, next to a Minnie Cooper.
“We’ve had lots of people interested in Jagger, but not many people prepared for the reality of how big he actually is!” said RSPCA staff.
The charity says they are being very specific about Jagger’s future owners, with potential adopters needing to be fully aware of the costs involved in keeping a dog of his size, as well as recognising the huge amount of space needed to house him.
“We would like him to go to new home experienced in keeping large/giant breed dogs,” say staff.
“His new owners must think about the costs associated with such a large dog – he will be expensive to feed and new owners will need to have a large enough house and garden to keep such a big dog,” say staff. "He will also need quite a big boot for travelling in the car!”
“There is also quite a lot of dribble involved in giving Jagger a cuddle,” they add.
