Phoebe Bridgers has called David Crosby a “little b***” after the musician dubbed her recent guitar-smashing stunt on Saturday Night Live “pathetic”.

During her debut appearance on the show on Saturday (7 February), Bridgers concluded her performance by smashing her guitar against a fake monitor.

When Crosby was asked on Twitter to share his opinion on her move, the 79-year-old responded: “pathetic”.

He appeared to double down on the criticism with a later tweet seemingly in reference to Bridgers. Crosby wrote: “Guitars are for playing… making music… not stupidly bashing them on a fake monitor for childish stage drama…

“I really do NOT give a flying F if others have done it before. It’s still STUPID.”

Bridgers has since replied to the former Byrds musician. In a tweet that has received over 14,500 likes, the Grammy nominee wrote: “little b***”.

Over the weekend, her stunt has received mixed reviews from viewers, with some calling it “disappointing” and “extra”.

Others, however, have defended Bridgers and stated that the criticism is “sexist” given the history of male musicians doing the same and being applauded for it – including The Who and The Clash.

Bridgers revealed that prior to the show, she had “told danelectro [the guitar's brand] I was going to do it and they wished me luck and told me they’re hard to break”.

In response to musician Kathleen Edwards’s comment that she was “upset” about the monitor that was damaged during the stunt, Bridgers said that “they made me a fake one to break lol”.

Crosby recently attracted criticism after he tweeted that he felt “meh” about Eddie Van Halen's work, not long after the legendary guitarist's death. He responded to the backlash claiming that he had not remembered that Van Halen had died and there was “no offense intended”.

Bridgers’s latest album Punisher was released in June. You can read The Independent’s four-star review of it here
