Shocking near miss as pram rolls into road

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The moment that an unsupervised pram rolling directly into the path of a car on a busy road in Derbyshire was caught on a car's dash cam.

As it drifts into the road in Swadlincote, driver Rebecca Moran, 25, slams her brakes on and sounds her horn in an attempt to alert other cars driving in the opposite direction.

A woman who is believed to be the child’s mother then rushes out onto the road and pulls the pushchair back to safety before thanking the driver for avoiding the young child.

Ms Moran shared the clip on her Facebook page in order to promote safe driving and urge drivers to keep their focus on the road.

She said: “This really shook me up and I cried my whole way to work - it has been a real eye opener for me. I just hope that half the people who have viewed, or shared, the video take into consideration what could happen. It would save another person’s life if you could just be more aware of the road and surroundings.

“It’s not something you see every day but there’s always that ‘what if’ in the back of my head; what if I hadn’t seen the buggy rolling towards the road; what if my brakes hadn’t stopped the car in time; what if the car behind me had hit the back of my car and pushed me forward.

She added: “This incident shows that anything can happen and you really need to concentrate, not just on the road, but on what’s happening around you!”

Ms Moran later amended the post to explain that she does not apportion blame to the child’s mother in the situation - arguing anyone is capable of experiencing a lapse in concentration.

Many have applauded Ms Moran for her driving on social media.

“Lots of people think that being a good driver is measured by the ability to push a pedal with the right foot, this video shows the makings of a good driver - mainly use of the eyes, well done!” said one.

“I feel for the mother. This has happened to me before. Not on a main road though. I put the brake on and sometimes it can come off without me realising. Such an easy accident to happen. Well done to the driver!” added another.

"Well done for the driver's exceptional reactions" one more chipped in.
