Officers and the air ambulance were called to Little Rissington Airfield, in Upper Rissington, Gloucestershire at 4.30pm yesterday following reports of the accident.
The 64-year-old man from Haslemere, Surrey, who was at the controls of the light aircraft, was pronounced dead at the scene.
His family and the coroner have been informed.
Gloucestershire police and the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is carrying out an investigation into the incident.
