Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

There were no fatalities, the East of England ambulance service said, adding that none of the injured are in a “time critical” condition.
The crash happened at 11:43am on Church Walk – an area to the north of Peterborough city centre.
Images from the scene showed that the badly-damaged bus had collided with a grey Toyota 4x4 before ploughing into the property.
Cambridgeshire Police said they received reports that the bus had also collided with a lorry before coming to a halt.
A team from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue used specialist cutting equipment to rescue two casualties from the car by 1pm. A further 12 walking wounded are being treated by the ambulance service at a nearby triage centre.
The fire and rescue service later tweeted: “Just in: 2 people safely rescued from car following bus collision in Peterborough - hard work by #team999”.
In a statement, Station Commander Jamie Johnson said: "The emergency services have worked extremely well together to successfully rescue and treat casualties.
"Severe damage has also been caused to a building as a result of the collision."
A structural engineer was called to assess damage to the building and a gas engineer isolated the mains.
A team from Cambridgeshire Fire & Rescue remain at the scene and a police investigation into the crash is expected to begin this afternoon.
The crash came as one person was killed and four seriously injured when a car ploughed into a branch of Costa Coffee in Westerham, Kent.
One witness described the crash as "the worst accident they have ever seen".
The car, believed to have been an Audi with two people onboard, crashed through the window of the popular high street coffee shop chain on The Green, Westerham, Kent, at around 10.30am.
