An 83-year-old pensioner was stabbed in the back in at a flat in Liverpool, police said.

The elderly man suffered a puncture wound after he was assaulted outside of a block of flats in the city’s Toxteth area on Friday evening, Merseyside police said.

A 30-year-old woman was arrested at a nearby property on suspicion of attempted wounding.

She remains in custody where she is being questioned by detectives, the force said.

“The man was taken to hospital where he is currently in a stable condition," a Merseyside police spokesperson said.

They added: "Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of what happened."
