From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

A one-year-old who died following an accident involving a car has been named locally as Pearl Black.

The baby was the daughter of Paul Black, a former contestant on BBC talent programme The Voice.

Her parents said: "She has left a massive hole in our hearts, the world will be a darker place without her. She was the reason we all lived."

Pearl was on her way home from a local park with her father when they were hit by a car.

Police are believed to be investigating reports that an unoccupied car rolled down a hill at an address in Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, into a wall which then crushed the youngster.

Pearl was taken to Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil by air ambulance after the incident at 1.39pm on Sunday but died a short time later.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "We can confirm officers responded to an emergency call at an address in Heolgerrig, Merthyr Tydfil.

"A female child was taken to hospital by air ambulance after an incident involving a single vehicle understood to be unoccupied at the time.

"Tragically, the infant died shortly afterwards."
