A major evacuation at Edinburgh airport has ended and passengers are being allowed back onto the premises following security investigations into a “suspicious object”.

Hundreds of passengers were reportedly left stood in the airport’s car park this morning as the building was evacuated at around 7am.

One man on Twitter claimed the plane he was sitting on was evacuated due to a “major security breech” as people waited to find out how their journeys would be affected.

“Seems serious… we’ve been taken of the plane and the whole airport has been evacuated. ‘Major security breech’,” the Mirror reported.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland confirmed officers had been investigating a “suspicious object”, but said the evacuation has now been “stood down”.

Passengers are having a “phased return” back into the airport, while public transport is now able to enter the airport and the roads have been reopened, the spokesperson added.

It is not known if any flights have been affected.
