From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A note inviting paramedics to block residents' cars has been left on the windscreen of an ambulance, in a heartfelt riposte to an abusive letter left for emergency crews days earlier telling them to move their vehicle.

The latest message, left anonymously, heaped lavish praise and thanks on the "unsung heroes" of the North West Ambulance Service.

It read: "Please DO block our street and parking spaces if needed! Park it wherever you like! You selflessly, bravely, and passionately save lives day in, day out. Without people like you, we would not know what to do!

“So **THANK YOU!** Really, thank you."

Earlier this month Kirsty Sharman, 26, from Stoke-on-Trent, was arrested after leaving a note for paramedics that read: "If this van is for anyone but No 14 then you have no right to be parked here.

"I couldn't give a s*** if the whole street collapsed. Now move your van from outside my house."

She also verbally abused an ambulance crew member while they were parked in a disabled bay outside her house.

Sharman was ordered to pay £285 in a fine, with costs and a victim surcharge.

The latest note, left for crews in Morcambe Bay, Lancashire, struck the opposite tone. It read: "You, along with the other emergency services, truly are our unsung heroes!

"Stay safe, well fed and watered, and warm.

"I hope more people realise how invaluable the ambulance service is."

The note was signed: "A thankful member of the public."

Paramedic Vinny Romaro tweeted a photograph of the note, thanking the writer and adding: "I’m sure this is a more accurate representation of what the public really think."
