A man has been crushed to death at a construction site near Canary Wharf after a wall collapsed on him.

Police said the accident happened shortly before 9am on Wednesday during building works in Westferry Road, on the Isle of Dogs in London.

Paramedics were called but the man, in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene 20 minutes later.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At this early stage it is understood the man received his injuries after a wall collapsed at the scene. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed.”

London Ambulance Service paramedics arrived within five minutes of being called, a spokesperson said.

“We sent a single responder by car, an ambulance crew, the hazard area response team, a duty officer and the London Air Ambulance to the scene,” he added.

“We arrived within five minutes but sadly despite extensive efforts to resuscitate the patient, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Inquiries into the circumstances of the accident continue and the man’s family are being informed.
