Your support makes all the difference.A man who called 999 because his fiance was having stomach cramps, insisted she was not pregnant moments before she gave birth to a baby boy.
Gareth Williams called for help as Rhiannon Oldham lay in severe pain at their home in the small town of Pontnewynydd, South Wales.
The couple thought that Ms Oldham had put on a few extra pounds after the festive period and Mr Williams told the emergency call handler that a “large lump” appeared to be coming out of her.
“‘She’s in a lot of pain, it’s like she’s trying to give birth to something but she’s not pregnant,” Mr Williams told the call handler. “She’s actually got this large lump coming out, it’s just coming out. She’s not pregnant.”
A few seconds later the couple’s first child, Phillip Alan, was born weighing 4lb 13oz.
“Oh no. No, she’s actually giving birth," Mr Williams said. "What do I do? The baby is crying and moving and everything.”
Call handler Chelsie Holbrook immediately dispatched a midwife as soon as she could.
“The alarm bells started to ring for me when Gareth said that Rhiannon had a large lump and before we knew it she had actually given birth,” Ms Holbrook told Wales Online. “The adrenaline was well and truly pumping at that point. I’ve delivered five babies in my time as a call handler and this one’s definitely up there in terms of the most dramatic.”
The couple, who got engaged on Valentine’s Day, are now back at home with their unexpected and healthy son and said they are “over the moon”.
“It was a huge shock because we had absolutely no idea that she was pregnant," Mr Williams said in a separate interview with ITV News.
“The last couple of weeks have been a blur. One minute we were planning for a wedding – now we’re planning for a nursery," Ms Oldham added.
