From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. This is the moment a lorry crushed a police car as it was blown over by strong winds.
The officer in the patrol vehicle had been called to the A1 in Scotland where another HGV had toppled over between two carriageways.
But as he was carrying out a “scene protection” on the busy stretch of road between Haddington and Dunbar, an even bigger lorry blew over and crushed his car.
Footage of the incident was shared on Twitter by Chief Superintendent Stewart Carle, head of the road policing unit, who said the officer, named Sergeant Easton, was “as cool as a cucumber” as he reported the incident.
Mr Carle said the sergeant inside the car was calm as he called and said: “We need to close the A1 now: a lorry has just toppled on to my patrol car. And I just polished it yesterday!”
Mr Carle added: “I nearly spilt my mug of tea but was quickly reassured when told the BMW was a ‘64 plate!”
A Police Scotland spokeswoman confirmed no-one was seriously injured in the incident on Tuesday morning, which closed the road until about 10pm.
It was the second incident recorded of lorries toppling over on the road due to severe weather on Tuesday.
Two other HGVs were travelling along the A1 when they toppled over on another section of the road in East Lothian earlier on Tuesday morning.
Again there were no reports of any injuries.
