From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

One man has died and another is in serious condition after they both fell from Kew Bridge in London.

The pair were rescued by crews from RNLI Chiswick after plunging into the River Thames at about 12.35pm on Monday.

But one was pronounced dead at the scene in west London shortly after, while the second remains in critical condition.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service, which attended the scene, said: “We were called at 12:37pm to reports of an incident on Corney Reach Way, Chiswick.

“We sent two ambulance crews, an incident response officer, two medics in cars and an advanced paramedic to the scene. We also dispatched our hazardous area response team and London’s Air Ambulance.”

They added: “We treated two men at the scene. Sadly, despite the efforts of medics, a man died at the scene.

“We took the second man to a major trauma centre as a priority.”

RNLI Chiswick confirmed one boat had been involved in the rescue.

Kew Police said in a tweet that officers were in attendance at the incident.

“Both [men] were pulled from the river,” the post read. “One was sadly pronounced deceased, whilst the other was taken to a west London hospital.”
