Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

A great-grandmother has scooped more than £850,000 on the National Lottery, Camelot said today.

Brenda Pugh, 70, from Millom in Cumbria, took an £850,513 slice of Wednesday's Lotto Rollover jackpot with her six lucky numbers:

Mrs Pugh, a widow, now plans to treat her two sons, two daughters, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

She said: "I don't usually stay up that late but after the news I thought I'd watch the draw.

"I got three and was excited about winning £10. Then four, then five and I'm thinking how much do you get for five. Then six, it was amazing and I was dancing round the living room."

Mrs Pugh added: "It is wonderful, I still can't believe it. I don't want a lot. I'm not going to move, I've been here for 47 years but I will have it redecorated and a new kitchen.

"I'm going to make sure my family are all ok, which will make me very happy, and of course it is going to be a very special Christmas."

The win came exactly nine years after her late husband Bill suffered a stroke which led to his death.

Mrs Pugh said: "I do think he was looking down on me. Strangely this week I had put on a necklace he had given me on our wedding day in 1960."

Tonight's EuroMillions jackpot is an estimated £13 million, while tomorrow's Lotto jackpot is in the region of £4.5 million.
