An enormous sinkhole has opened up in the middle of a busy road in Manchester.

Eyewitnesses said the hole is about 40ft wide already with says further cracks are forming.

It appears as though no vehicles or people have fallen into the hole.

Authorities are turning off the water supply in the area around Mancunian Way.

The road had been closed off earlier in the day due to flooding.

Manchester City Council said in a statement: "Motorists should be aware that part of the Mancunian Way is currently closed in both directions due to a collapse in the road caused by the extremely wet weather.

It is thought a culvert beneath the Mancunian Way has been eroded by the heavy rain fall, which has cause the road above to be impacted.

City council and united utilities officers are currently at the scene to assess the situation. Depending on the extent of the issue the road may remain closed over the weekend."
