From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Parts of Ireland have been hit by flooding after heavy rain and strong winds swept across the country.

A number of power shortages were reported, as around 1,400 homes in Dublin were left without any electricity overnight.

Heavy rain led to flooding in parts of Country Tyrone and motorists were advised to drive with care or avoid roads altogether due to the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, a series of weather warnings were issued for the UK by the Met Office.

According to the Met Office, rain is expected to clear away eastward overnight but strong gales will remain. Showers are likely to return on Monday and the North West will face the heaviest downpours.

The Northern Ireland Weather and Flood Advisory Service also issued a flood warning for areas surrounding the river Mourne.

Along with Northern Ireland, southern Scotland, northwest England and north Wales also experienced heavy rain today.

As of this morning, there were 72 flood warnings issued as the Environment Agency - meaning immediate action was required.
